Two New Motoko Kusanagi Sculptures by Hajime Sorayama to Make Their World Premiere at “Ghost in the Shell The Exhibition” and “SORAYAMA: Light, Reflection, Transparency ―TOKYO―”

The Ghost in the Shell Exhibition: Ghost and the Shell Production Committee (Kodansha Ltd., Mori Building Co., Ltd., KDDI Corporation, Production I.G, Inc., PARCO Co., Ltd., and Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc.) will present “Ghost in the Shell The Exhibition” at TOKYO NODE, the information hub within Toranomon Hills, from January 30 (Fri.) to April 5 (Sun.), 2026.

We are pleased to announce that one of the two newly created sculptures by Hajime Sorayama—based on Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell (original story by Masamune Shirow)—will be unveiled to the public for the very first time at this exhibition.
The second sculpture will have its world premiere at Sorayama’s largest retrospective, “SORAYAMA: Light, Reflection, Transparency ―TOKYO―,” held at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO (Tokyo) from March 14 (Sat) to May 31 (Sun), 2026.

These works reinterpret Motoko Kusanagi, the iconic figure of cyberpunk science fiction, as a “body of the future” through Sorayama’s distinctive vision. Positioned at the intersection of the series’ central question—the boundary between human and machine—and Sorayama’s own artistic pursuit, the sculptures represent a powerful and contemporary experiment in expression.
As “future bodies” infused with Sorayama’s aesthetic, they offer a three-dimensional experience of resonance between the world of Ghost in the Shell and Sorayama’s artistic universe.

Original merchandise will be available for purchase at both venues.

Additionally, 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the theatrical release of GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995), a milestone that has reignited global attention on the series. In 2026, a brand-new TV animation, THE GHOST IN THE SHELL produced by Science SARU, is scheduled to air, with Hajime Sorayama creating the title logo design—another major topic of interest.

Within this context, the new sculpture has been conceived. Standing at approximately three meters tall, the work embodies a powerful presence, its mirrored and transparent surfaces producing layered reflections of light that resonate directly with the viewer’s physical senses.

We invite you to experience, at the venue, Sorayama’s ongoing vision of futuristic aesthetics and encounter the new figure of Motoko Kusanagi emerging at the forefront of that vision.

Comment from Hajime Sorayama

I designed this piece with my own respect and affection for Shirow Masamune. While staying close to the concept of Ghost in the Shell, I also reflected my own aesthetics. By working with Motoko Kusanagi as the theme in a three-dimensional form, I feel that the idea and concept allow me to express her presence and world with greater freedom.
