To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Innocence, two landmark sci-fi anime films directed by Mamoru Oshii, Innocence 4K Remastered and GHOST IN THE SHELL 4K Remastered, will be screened simultaneously for a limited two-week run starting Friday, February 28, at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya and other select theaters.
A brand-new trailer featuring stunning 4K remastered footage has been released, along with a special comment from Akio Otsuka, the voice of Batou, reflecting on the film’s 20-year legacy. Otsuka, who has voiced Batou in numerous Ghost in the Shell anime and game adaptations, shared his thoughts on the milestone:
“It’s hard to believe 20 years have passed since Innocence was released. Looking back, I realize how short life truly is. I was 45 at the time; now I’m 65, having experienced countless events and twists along the way. I’m still stunned at how much life can change. I also remember the late Atsuko Tanaka, who voiced Motoko Kusanagi, once saying, ‘If only we could undergo cyberization…’ For performers, the decline in physical ability due to aging is a terrifying reality, but cyberization is still a distant dream. So, I’ll keep honing my craft while taking care of myself. Please enjoy Innocence on the big screen!”
The newly unveiled “breathtaking” trailer showcases the film’s rich, detailed visuals, which were originally selected for competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The visuals are accompanied by the music of Kenji Kawai, a long-time collaborator of director Mamoru Oshii, who also composed the score for the Hong Kong film Twilight Warriors: Kowloon Walled City, currently in theaters.
The trailer concludes with an emotional reunion scene between Major Motoko Kusanagi and Batou from GHOST IN THE SHELL, featuring the lines:
Batou: “It’s been a while, Major.”
Motoko: “You haven’t changed.”
The nostalgic exchange adds to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming screenings of the 4K remastered versions.
A special giveaway campaign has also been announced: fans who watch both films will have a chance to win autographed merchandise signed by Mamoru Oshii. More details will be revealed on the official website.
This is a rare opportunity to experience two masterpieces—GHOST IN THE SHELL and Innocence—on the big screen with high-quality visuals and sound. Don’t miss the chance to witness these legendary films in theaters starting February 28, for a limited two-week run!
