Shirow Masamune, the creator of the globally acclaimed Ghost in the Shell, made his major debut in 1985 with the sci-fi manga Appleseed, followed by the launch of Ghost in the Shell in 1989. Long before cutting-edge technologies became part of everyday life, Shirow’s distinctive sensibility allowed him to incorporate such concepts into his work, crafting a world that seemed to foresee today’s information-driven society—captivating countless readers in the process.
His meticulously detailed artwork, densely constructed plots overflowing with information, and the wealth of commentary that fills even the margins bring an intense energy to his creations and ignite the imagination of readers. Shirow’s philosophical explorations, woven throughout his works, have influenced creators around the world and continue to inspire new works across diverse genres.
Early works include Black Magic, which depicts a world governed by the colossal computer Nemesis; the post–Fifth World War sci-fi action series Appleseed, following SWAT officer Deunan and her fully cyborg partner Briareos as they survive in a ruined city; Dominion, a comedic battle between Police SWAT member Leona, her beloved mini-tank Bonaparte, and the villainous Buaku gang; and Ghost in the Shell, chronicling the missions of Public Security Section 9, an elite government task force. Shirow also created Orion, a fantasy work depicting ancient sorcerers and summoned deities clashing over the forbidden “Ninpō Kujūryū.”
Tracing the breadth of Shirow’s expansive oeuvre—including both analog manuscripts and digital output—alongside a wealth of materials from his personal collection and extensive commentary, Masamune Shirow: The World of the Creator — The Trajectory of Imagination Behind Ghost in the Shell offers a rare look into the more intimate, personal side of the artist.
This official exhibition catalog compiles the manuscripts, artworks, and commentary displayed at the first large-scale exhibition ever devoted to Masamune Shirow, making it an invaluable record of his creative universe.
