Ghost in the Shell × Emi Kusano: Immersive Solo Exhibition “EGO in the Shell” at Offline Gallery, New York

  • Overview
  • In official collaboration with Ghost in the Shell, Japanese artist Emi Kusano will present her immersive solo exhibition EGO IN THE SHELL: GHOST INTERROGATION at Offline Gallery in New York City, from October 8–29, 2025. Organized by Offline, SuperRare’s new gallery dedicated to the intersection of art and technology, the exhibition inspired by the world of Ghost in the Shell transforms the gallery into a site where memory, surveillance, and identity converge.

Emi Kusano is internationally recognized as one of Japan’s pioneering figures in AI and digital art. Her works have been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa, and the FIT Museum, and she has collaborated with Christie’s × Gucci. Since the early days of NFT art, Kusano has explored the creative potential of generative AI, merging technology, digital culture, and Japanese sensibilities into a distinctive practice that positions her at the forefront of the evolving art-tech landscape.

In this exhibition, Kusano combines AI reconstructions with fragments of her own past to explore the fragility of memory and the instability of selfhood. Highlights include Ghost Interrogation, an installation where a mandala-like sculpture of stacked CRT monitors projects both Kusano’s private memories and their AI reconstructions. A holographic version of the artist appears simultaneously as interrogator and interrogated, while surveillance cameras reflect the viewers back into the installation. By bringing together ancient philosophy, the cyberpunk canon, and contemporary digital culture, the exhibition becomes a meditation on what it means to possess—or lose—a self in our algorithmically mediated age.
