Official Report & Photos Released: “THE GHOST IN THE SHELL” at Annecy Film Festival’s “SPECIAL EVENTS”

“THE GHOST IN THE SHELL” Celebrates World Premiere at Annecy Film Festival! Director Moko-chan Reflects on the “Overwhelming Passion” and a Historic Milestone for the TV Franchise

The world premiere screening of the new TV anime series THE GHOST IN THE SHELL took place in the “Special Events” category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in Annecy, France—the world’s largest celebration of animation. The screening marks a historic milestone for the festival, as it is the first time in its history that a television series has been featured in this prestigious category. Prior to the screening, the production team hosted a panel discussion, igniting intense enthusiasm among the global fans who packed the venue to capacity.

■ A Historic First: “Returning to the Roots of the Original Manga” and Science SARU’s New Challenge
The panel commenced with an introduction by Marcel Jean, Artistic Director of the Annecy Festival, who declared it “a very special day in the history of our festival.” Taking the stage were Director Mokochan, Kohei Sakita (Producer, Science SARU), Kengo Abe (Producer, Bandai Namco Filmworks), and Daichi Sasa (Producer, Kodansha / Moderator).

This monumental project marks the first time in the franchise’s history that Shirow Masamune’s original 1989 manga has been adapted directly as the core foundation for an anime series. Producer Abe explained the vision behind approaching Science SARU—a studio highly acclaimed for capturing the raw, foundational joy of animation. He stated that the goal was “to create a work that serves as a hub for the entire series—something dedicated Ghost in the Shell fans and newcomers can enjoy together, but above all, an incredibly entertaining piece of work.” Accepting this challenge, Director Mokochan reflected on the passionate energy of the production floor, where a staff fueled by a shared love for the franchise had assembled: “Our mindset from the start was to take the overwhelming energy of the original manga and turn it into a truly magnificent piece of animation.”

■ Director Mokochan Explains World-Building Rooted in “Human Physicality” and “Pure Grit”
During the panel discussion, Director Moko-chan took center stage to peel back the layers of the production, sharing actual creative assets with the audience.

The presentation opened with the theme of “Layout and Animation,” highlighting Japan’s uniquely traditional, hand-drawn workflow from storyboarding to final compositing. “While the source material is sci-fi, it is also a deeply spiritual work,” the director emphasized, underscoring a commitment to the “physicality” of hand-drawn art. “Rather than relying on the latest technology, I wanted to explore what could be expressed through human hands.” Conversely, the team utilized 3D assets for spatial rendering, achieving dynamic camera movements that would be impossible to replicate through hand-drawing alone.

The next segment, dedicated to “World-Building,” unveiled the staggering, unconventional depth of detail woven into the series—averaging more than three times the information volume of a standard TV anime, exemplified by the main character, Motoko Kusanagi, having 48 distinct costume designs. “We closely followed Shirow-sensei’s philosophy that a meticulously detailed world exists first, rather than a world simply being built to serve the narrative,” the director explained. Attendees were shown retro-futuristic designs inspired by 1989-era home appliances, as well as the signature in-universe “Shirow typography,” which was entirely drawn by hand without relying on generative AI. Reflecting on how the team conquered this monumental workload, the director smiled and said, “We pushed through it with pure grit,” drawing a massive wave of laughter and applause from the audience.

■ Striking Color Aesthetics and a Rousing Standing Ovation
The final segment, titled “Visual Composition and Compositing,” revealed that the team implemented a “color script” early in production to establish distinct color themes for each individual episode.

The director detailed a unique aesthetic approach characterized by “lowering the brightness while raising the color saturation.” Furthermore, regarding the background art, the director passionately described how they channeled the core essence of Masamune Shirow’s work into every corner of the screen: “Even when drawing inorganic machinery, we rendered it like blood vessels—expressing a sense of ‘vitality’ that blurs the line between living organisms and machines.”

“While it is a grand piece of sci-fi, at its core lies a universal human story. I hope you will watch it through to the end,” the director shared. With that final message, the world premiere screening of a special omnibus edit of Episodes 1 and 2 (English dubbed version) commenced. The audience was instantly captivated by Science SARU’s breathtakingly fluid animation and meticulously crafted worldview. As the roughly 45-minute screening came to a close, the venue erupted into thunderous applause and a rousing standing ovation. Filled with intense energy and emotion, the event marked a triumphant and definitive first step onto the global stage for this new era of Ghost in the Shell.
