ORIGINAL COMIC攻殻機動隊 GHOST IN THE SHELL 漫画原作

// STORY

Set in Japan in the year 2029 AD after Non-Nuclear World War IV. A special covert organization called "Shell Squad" was established to locate and eliminate criminal threats. It operates under the Prime Minister's direct control, with no formal ranks, relying instead on meritocracy. The team solves various challenging cases, such as those involving cyber warfare and a man who suffered a ghost hack and had been implanted with artificial memories at the "human factory" rehabilitation center. Amidst this, the most unique figure in the history of cybercrime, known as the Puppeteer, seeks political asylum as an entity with individual consciousness. Meanwhile, Major Motoko Kusanagi falls victim to a trap and winds up on trial for murder. A surprising destiny awaits these two as the paths of the genius hacker known as the Puppeteer and Motoko Kusanagi, touted by her chief as having talents rarer than an esper, become forever intertwined.

// CHARACTER

Motoko Kusanagi草薙 素子

The practical leader of the offensive unit, she was formerly addressed as "Lieutenant." Currently, the team members refer to her as "Major." Ishikawa sometimes also refers to her as the "Female Gorilla." She is a full-body cyborg proficient in combat techniques, marksmanship, and cyber warfare. Despite her rough exterior, she consistently and flawlessly executes her missions. After being recruited by Aramaki, she initially had doubts and voiced complaints, but over time built a trusting relationship and a strong bond. During an investigation, she falls victim to a trap and loses her cyborg body. However, she soon encounters the Puppeteer, who is regarded as the most distinctive hacker in the annals of cybercrime. This encounter leads her to disappear into the depths of the net. She wields the Seburo C-25 handgun.

Daisuke Aramaki荒巻大輔

Referred to as Chief, he is the head of Public Security Section 9. Among the team members, he is often called Chief, Monkey Chief, or Old Ape. He regards Motoko Kusanagi as having a talent more precious than an esper, and he establishes the Section 9 team after recruiting her. Though he rarely praises his team members openly, he has said he thinks of them "like his own children." He is also adept at handling negotiations with higher-ups in order to ensure a system where the team can operate freely.

Batoバトー

A team member with a background as a former member of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Rangers. He has artificial eyes, and much of his body has cybernetic enhancements. With his formidable and muscular physique, he excels in hand-to-hand combat and boasts high combat skills. Contrary to his appearance, however, he is also skilled in cyber warfare. Chatty and easygoing, he favors more flamboyant assignments compared to undercover investigations. Although his penchant for disassembling cars sometimes causes him to overlook crucial team affairs, he holds a strong affection for his teammates, as demonstrated by his emotional reaction to the death of the newcomer Yano.

Togusaトグサ

A former beat detective with the main office, he was recruited to the team by Motoko. Motoko and Ishikawa often tease him, calling him "rookie," "half-man," and telling him things like, "You'll soon start hearing the whispers of ghosts yourself." Apart from his cyberbrain, his body is organic. He is also the only married member of the team. He has an affinity for revolvers and uses the M2007, despite recommendations that he should switch to a Seburo.

Ishikawaイシカワ

An older team member who has a history with Motoko and sports a thick beard. He refers to Motoko as the "female gorilla," despite getting scolded for doing so. Proficient in cyber warfare, he excels at information gathering, analysis, data manipulation, network decoding, and other related tasks.

Bomaボーマ

With a large build similar to Bato, this bulky team member has a shaved head and two cybernetic eyes. Like Ishikawa, he usually handles behind-the-scenes tasks such as information analysis, but when Motoko is in a pinch, he wastes no time jumping into the fray where he wields large weaponry such as rocket launchers.

Fuchikomaフチコマ

These combat vehicles operated by Section 9 are equipped with artificial intelligence. Multiple units exist, and each night they are set to a synchronized state to account for the differences in each unit's individual experiences accumulated during the day's missions. While there are variations in equipment, efforts have been made to ensure consistency in the artificial intelligence across all units. However, Bato limits his use of the Tachikoma. They are equipped with optical camouflage and are capable of deploying wires like spider threads for movement.

Colonel Mallesマレス大佐

Former ruler of the Gavel Republic. After fleeing the country, he was secretly residing in Japan until his hideout was uncovered by Section 9. Before being extradited to his own country, he offered a hefty sum of money to avoid being sent home, fearing execution upon returning.

Colonel Tonoda殿田大佐

During wartime, he held the rank of Colonel and was known as the Red Devil. A sharp-minded leader of the former Intelligence Division, he has a long-standing acquaintance with Aramaki. Since retiring, he has been enjoying activities such as golf, gradually gaining a slightly overweight physique. He treats robots as objects and makes similar remarks towards Motoko.

Toru Soma相馬亨

A terrorist whom Motoko and Ishikawa failed to assassinate four years ago. As retribution for her two subordinates who were killed, Motoko orders Soma to shoot his own son for his involvement in torturing her subordinates. Seeking revenge, heavily armed allies accompany him as they target Motoko.

Chief Nakamura中村部長

Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Treaty Examination Department, also known as Public Security Section 6. He doggedly tracks down the unprecedented hacker in the annals of cybercrime, the Puppeteer. He then devises an Aggressive Barrier to counter the Puppeteer, aiming to entice the criminal into infiltrating a highly classified body. He then tries to procure the Puppeteer after they seek refuge in Section 9.

The Puppeteer人形使い

The hacker, recognized as the most unique in the history of cybercrime and referred to as the Puppeteer, possesses the ability to infiltrate and manipulate any prosthetic body at its discretion. Created through Project 2501, it started as an artificial intelligence program, but gained self-awareness. It claims, "I am a life form that emerged from the sea of information," and requests asylum as a distinct living entity.
